Overtown - Attrattive storiche

Celebrazione della storia culturale

Quest'area storicamente afro-americana vanta una fiera tradizione culturale.

A place that’s easily overlooked (but shouldn’t be), Overtown is one of the most important -- if not the most important -- spots in Miami when it comes to black history, as well as being one of the oldest neighborhoods in town. At the turn of the 20th century, it was known as Colored Town and was used as an area for black workers who built and serviced the railroad, hotels, and streets. Despite the Black Codes and Jim Crow laws, Overtown still managed to grow, soon becoming a vital area for the black community when it came to shopping, business interactions, and entertainment.

Overtown - Attrattive storiche

Timothy A. Barber, executive director of the Black Archives, which makes its home in the historic Lyric Theater, explains that the establishment of Overtown as an important cultural center in Miami came from local and visiting artists who would go “over town” to their hotels, or to continue the party after their shows finished elsewhere in the city. If you want to experience an integral part of Miami’s culture, walk the streets of Overtown, visit the theater, look at the art on the walls, and don’t leave without getting some soul food in you.

Il quartiere ospita anche alcuni tra gli eventi preferiti dai residenti come il popolarissimo People's Bar-B-Que, progetti musicali no-profit, festival delle arti, mercati ortofrutticoli e altro ancora.
